Human albinos hunted like animals in Africa
Being persecuted for your skin color is nothing new, but being an albino in Malawi is downright deadly. In some parts of Africa, albinos are being hunted to extinction so their bones can be sold as magical items on the black market.
Albinism, a condition which is marked by a lack of melanin, leaving skin, hair, and eyes without pigment. It isn’t a common condition in any part of the world, occurring in about 1 in 20,000 births, but in some parts of South Africa albinos make up 1 in 4000 people. Some believe that the lack of pigment is a punishment from God, or some disease that could be contagious.
Witchdoctors in Africa believe that the bones of albinos carry special magic powers, bringing wealth, happiness, and good luck. So albinos are being kidnapped and murdered and graves are even being desecrated in search of bones to be used in rituals in several African countries.
Rabbits feet are never lucky for the rabbit, and in this case being an albino would seem the unluckiest of curses for the albinos themselves. It’s the 2000’s. We now understand the science behind skin color, and it’s just that, color. There is pigment, some have more than others, and some don’t have any at all. That’s it. No magic, no creators curse, no disease.
We should be past the whole killing people for color thing by now, shouldn’t we?
Come on people, let’s evolve…
